Camp Bestival gets a groove-on with Hot Chip and Chic

Another day, another festival line up and although the atmosphere at Camp Bestival may be in stark contrast to that of Hideout - there is no shortage of dancing opportunities.

Hot Chip Tweeted not long ago they were just one track short of finishing their album and they are going to make a festival return this summer at Lulworth Castle (and many more to follow we suspect).

Coupled with that, there is the king of style, groove and funk - Nile Rodgers and Chic, who will get everyone from your new born to your grandparents shaking their junk. Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Little Dragon will take to the stage through to Ben UFO, Mosca and Zed Bias.

Somehow Camp Bestival was the only festival I managed to crack my head open at last year - let's hope that doesn't happen again...

Wow - I'm going to have to write a fuller post on this mind jolting experience (well I have already actually and it will come out in magazine form in a month or so) but whatever people say about how amazing Berlin is, and especially Berghain and Panorama Bar, well, it's right!

The weird fetish shit is there, but kind of hidden - you don't have big German men shagging in a circle while they stroke their handlebar mustaches.

I was there to see Scuba, who as SCB went back to back with Will Saul for five and a half hours.

It was fucking epic - and the top side of the release below basically acts as a check list for the club.

Radio ClubFoot - Hello Enjoyed, tell us a bit about yourself
Enjoyed - Hello! I'm Peter Evans-Pritchard, from Soldridge. I make music and eat cereal. Occasionally at the same time. I started making tracks properly back in 2009 after several years of tinkering around with things. I try to make happy, colourful dance music, which I call 'joystep' in the genre tag on iTunes. I also run a small label called Shoes Off, which focuses on comfort music and will be bearing some rather delicious fruits this coming year...

RCF - The Hampshire countryside might not jump out as the most obviousplace for an up and coming producer to be based, is there much of ascene?
Enjoyed - It's more a case of scenery than a scene... Soldridge is a hamlet, which is one smaller than a town. There's less than 100 people here so it's very quiet. It's a great place to hide away and make tunes though. And if it all gets too much I can just head into the forest with the dog and take a breather. I'm a good half hour away from any cities, which isn't great for gigging, but there is the annual Soldridge Music Festival, which is now in its fourth year. That's always a lot of fun to play!

RCF - Which other producers are you a big fan of at the moment?
Enjoyed - There's a whole bunch of people I love at the moment. I'm listening to a lot of Crazy P, including both the solo projects from Hot Toddy and Ron Basejam, Space Dimension Controller, a dude called Co La, who is making music like no one else I've ever heard, When Saints Go Machine, Gauntlet Hair, Duff Disco and a guy called Alvin Band, who's Mario Kart influenced album, Rainbow Road, includes a bunch of similarly themed gems such as Bowser's Castle, King Boo and Shells. There's also my two favourite lads, Vanilla and P.SUS, who are both still knocking out tune after tune, and normally giving away said tune for free! They've both got some exciting things on the way this year, which I'm incredibly stoked to hear.

RCF - When was the last time you enjoyed music?
Enjoyed - I listened to the new Underwater Records Compilation today, nice and loud in the car on the way back home. That was excellent. And before that I was listening to a load of old Junior Boy's Own compilations that were all superb. And in terms of enjoying live music, the last time was actually last month when I saw my good pal Seams melting minds at Cargo in London. Always a pleasure.

RCF - If you were charged with putting together a festival main stageline-up, with yourself and other three acts - who would you have?
Enjoyed - It would have to be the big three I think: Underworld, The Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk, unless I had a tighter budget in which case I would love to play with Chad Valley, Little Dragon and The Cat Empire. Either would be dreamy.

Oh - glorious! The only way to describe Flatline the opening track from Jacques Greene's new EP, Concealer.

The first release on new label VASE - Mr Greene's very own Canadian based imprint - it is anything but lacking life. Not in the sense it is banging, but more because it's so full of texture, beauty and soul.

You could almost describe it in the same way that funny woman with frizzy white hair used to describe wine with Loyd Grossman.

David Bowie is a hero - a musical legend and a spaceman - and today he's celebrating his 65th birthday with a party on Saturn (we're speculating on that last bit).

He's a musical pioneer who allowed electro-pop to be possible, he turned the concept album on its head and so much more.

Now Playing @6Music on BBC 6 Music had an awesome special on the Thin White Duke on Friday night which you can listen to on the iPlayer until next Friday, during which, oddly, one of the most requested songs was this homage to Bowie by Flight of the Conchords.

New Build is the side project of Hot Chippers Felix Martin and Al Doyle (who also turned out for LCD Soundsystem) and their engineer Tom Hopkins.

After the success of Jo Goddard's bit on the side with Raf Daddy maybe his friends were feeling a bit jealous - but given this actually came out in November it hasn't cut through as much as Bear Hug.

But, it is still good music nonetheless. It isn't pounding dancefloor, but more musical craft in the style we know and love Hot Chip and LCD. Not sure what's more to come from them, but just be grateful with what they've already given you!

But then you think about it, and they are actually pretty great. Their second album Ta-Da was a bit of a flop - well calling it something like that it's inevitably going to happen! But their debut, self-titled record had some tunes - Comfortably Numb, Take Your Mama and Filthy/Gorgeous.

Let's start 2012 as we mean to go on - awesome music from new, young talented Brits ready to take the world by storm - step up, Ifan Dafydd.

The Welshman was at first thought to be a psydenum for James Blake - then everyone remembered James Blake is hanging out with Bon Iver and gone a bit weird - and in fact, the young man from Banger is pretty shit hot without having to live in anyone's shadow.

Now there's a follow up to his No Good/Miranda EP - remixes of Amy Winehouse and Usher on White Label which won support from all corners. Coming out at the end of the month on vinyl via the new Push & Run label (a week later digitally), Treehouse and To Me are set to cause quite a lot of noise at the top of this new year.

The Radio ClubFoot awards recognise the great and the good in music over the past 12 months, and given the depth and quality 2011 has had to offer, it’s been fun picking the winners!

Venue of the year: Corsica Studios
Special Mention: KOKO
Let’s not beat around the bush, Corsica Studios is a South London dive. There is nothing Kevin McCloud would find endearing or innovative about the structure – but drop him into the club when it’s filled with one of their sensational line-ups over the past 12 months and he’d forget all about cornerstones and building regulations.

The sound is great, and there is no pretension to Corsica. The vibe is like a house party, and perhaps most importantly, is that little bit away from a postcode beginning with E. See Trouble Vision for some of 2011’s highlights.

Performance of the year: The Streets at Glastonbury
Special Mention: Chase & Status at Glastonbury, Friendly Fires at Heaven
‘The King is Dead, Long live the King’ – for those of a certain age Mike Skinner is basically the don. His lyrics and demeanor in Original Pirate Material and A Grand Don’t Come for Free cut through a generation who aspired to go out partying, meet girls, have fun, and frankly be cool as fuck.

There farewell Glastonbury set was mesmerising. Going up against Beyonce on the Pyramid stage a gender divide occurred as the John Peel was filled with people ready to act on every word delivered by Skinner, mosh, run at each other – and all while a taxidermy fox was looking on.

Artist of the year: The 2 Bears
Special Mentions: SBTRKT, Friendly Fires
Not only are The 2 Bears the nicest people in dance music, but they have had a sensational 2011. Bear Hug was one of the anthems of the summer – and provided one of the best videos – and Work is storming dance floors through the recent darks nights.

Their sets are full of fun, especially when Raf Daddy takes to the mic, Be Strong will be one of the albums of 2012 – and Joe Goddard also found time to put out Gabriel.

Album of the year: Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie xx – We’re New Here
Special Mentions: Jay Z & Kanye West – Watch the Throne
The haunting voice of Scott-Heron cut with the most sought after producer of the year created the best LP of 2011. The lyrics are powerful, heartfelt and moving and Jamie xx reworked the original, I’m New Here, to superb effect.

Tracks like I’ll Take Care of You can create amazing personal feeling and means so much on a personal level – and then when Gil Scott-Heron sadly passed, the feeling in the album was intensified.

Special Mentions: Rogerseventytwo – You Take Me Higher, Joe Goddard ft. Valentina – Gabriel
‘Can I get a little something for the weekend,’ has been one of the lyrics of the summer. The track has managed to blur the trends of uplifting and soulful melody and vocal which has been making a big return thanks to the Crosstown Rebels smashing up everything in their path, and Bristolian Julio Bashmore to name but two; with the reemergence of garage’s syncopated and dirty basslines.

You can hear those influences running through, so you think – well, must be this Breach character injecting infectious dance floor DNA.

It’s just a belting piece of music, and in the long, cold, dark nights – just switch it on and it’ll bring back memories of summer.

What a year Maya Jane Coles has had. She has gone from obscurity to one of the biggest producers and DJs in the world, a Mixmag cover girl (not quite as crude as it sounds), she was ninth in the Resident Advisor poll, and DJ Mag have just named her Best Producer

Nocturnal Sunshine is the dub alias of the British/Japanese producer – and she is still only 24-years old. There is no doubt 2012 has been hers.

We may have found the soundtrack of summer 2012 already - after Oxford's finest, Jonquil, have announced details of their new album which will drop on March 5th next year.

The group is part of Blessing Force - the incredible self styled collective which produces an amazing array of music, and includes Chad Valley, Pet Moon, Trophy Wife and loads more.

Already on their third album, it's going to be called Point of Go - while the first track, It's My Part, is below to sample, along with a collection of Blessing Force magic.

Yuri Suzuki talks us through his Red Stripe can sound system

Last week we descended on the Village Underground, in East London with the purple leggings wearing trendy kids, and went to see why people were making such a fuss about this sound system made out of Red Stripe cans.

A pretty awesome concept which recycled remains of one party – discarded beer tins from Notting Hill Carnival – and used their essence and DNA to try and create a speaker which could recreate a party of a similar vibe wherever it was set up.

“I was really inspired by the sound systems in Jamaica” designer of this extraordinary contraption, Yuri Suzuki told us, as he took a sip from a bottle water – strange given the nature of the event, and the abundance of Caribbean inspired lager.

“They make huge sound systems and really good quality by themselves, so I was like – okay, lets make a speaker with the cans.”

You may be reading this and thinking – yer, I’ve had a crazy idea like that before, but by the time you've sobered up you've either forgotten about it or realised there’s no way you could actually do it.

This real life Wallace-cum-Doc Brown has made a mechanical breakfast maker – hit go, and a full English comes out the other end – so logic, common sense and impossible don’t really fit into his vocabulary.

Maybe it’s a translation issue?

“There are limitations using the cans, but at the same time it’s making good results,” our Japanese mastermind continues to describe.

“Unfortunately it doesn’t make much of a bass sound – but it does make a really nice tweaking sound – a really nice middle and high.”

The lack of bass was a bit of a shame with Ben UFO and the top man at Numbers, Spencer, on the decks that evening. But it looked sensationally cool, and is an amazing idea – so we can maybe let him off.

Remarkably Yuri had flown in from Tokyo just the night before and was jetting back off the next day – before coming back to London the following week. But he did appreciate the local cultures, and knew the music he was trying to cater for when creating this astonishing feat of engineering.

“I really like the music coming from London like dubstep and grime,” he explains.

“Currently I’m living in Stockholm and they have a dance culture called skweee which is really nice.”

As NASA are launching another space probe to Mars to investigate dried out craters on the Red Planet – I reckon discovery of life would be much better served by getting Yuri to create some crazy arse party on the moon, using plectrums and Hobnobs.

That would get E.T. popping by on his bicycle…

We've just discovered this other little gem - which apparently is due a release on Peacefrog - and it's pretty awesome.

The making of N.A.S.A.'s 'The Spirit of Apollo' in London

Stuck for something to do on Saturday night? Well if you want to mix your music and culture, there’s the UK premiere of N.A.S.A.’s The Spirit of Apollo.

Not a massive fan of Tom Hanks – well, this has nothing to do with space aviation funnily enough – but Sam Spiegel (aka Squeak E. Clean) who has directed the film and written film scores, produced the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Crystal Castles and shown Kanye West the benefit of strings for his Glow in the Dark Tour, as well as being pretty key in the Becks' Green Box Project – the odd green boxes that pop up sometimes which we still aren’t sure about really…

The doc follows N.A.S.A.’s (North America/South America) traveling the world and making their debut album with M.I.A., Santigold, Chuck D, George Clinton and loads of other people.

It’s part of the onedotzero festival on the South Bank, London, and there are still some tickets floating about (check here) and there’s an afterparty

Reckon it’ll be a good date thing – class, music, South Bank and fun ;-)

Big up We Are S.M.E who hooked us onto this track by StooShe - 'a new female urban girl pop act,' says the Radio 2 announcer.

And we are pretty interested about them to be honest.

There haven't been that many girl bands about worth getting excited about to be honest, but these three have attitude and talk about teenage pregnancy with school girl innocence. The sort of girls who are so sweet at school, but when that bell rings on a Friday afternoon they turn into right little monkeys.

Betty Woz Gone is a great pop tune, but they've thought of the bigger picture and got one of the producers of the moment - Zed Bias - to have a go on it and create a dirty garage rework.

Bloody hell - it's been a while since we've heard from Blackpool's finest, Victoria Hesketh aka Little Boots - but she's back, with Shake.

As the second person we ever interviewed for the radio show in Nottingham we feel a strong sense of love for her, but a bit like an ex-girlfriend who you see on a night out for the first time in a while wearing a new look - we were a bit taken aback by the beginning of her return.

Well, it sounds like you've just entered some dark, M.A.N.D.Y.-esque night in Berlin - and so it isn't surprising to find out it's been produced by Simian Mobile Disco-er James Ford.

Her vocals have the same Stuck on Repeat feel - but this time there isn't really any need for Fake Blood to take on the remix to make it all dirty and almost as if Little Boots are all Victoria is wearing.

Have a listen - it's a surprisingly good return.

It even gets better with each listen.

That's exactly what sound artist Yuri Suzuki has done, with the Red Stripe cans collected after this year Red Bull Music Academy Notting Hill Carnival event went off (again) fronted by Major Lazer and friends.

It's called Make Something from Nothing - and for music fans, it's a pretty good way of staying green.

At 2.5 meters high and inspired by heavy bass and Jamiacan soundsystems, all it needs is a place to let it rip - and we don't have to wait too long as tomorrow (November 16) at Village Underground, London, Ben UFO and NMBERS founder Spencer are down to test out how just how much it can take.

SBTRKT has been pretty busy in 2011 - becoming friends with Drake, releasing one of the biggest electronic records of the year and chumming up with Thom Yorke as part of Radiohead's TKOL 1234567.

Not to mention the shows he's put on from dark and dingy clubs to festivals all over the world.

And now he pulls this out of the bag. Remixing the dulcet tones of Frank Ocean and his track Thinking Bout You, this made me slip back into a happy place after roofers woke me up this morning with incessant banging.

NEW MUSIC: Factory Floor - Two Different Ways

Out of the ashes of LCD Soundsystem's legacy and straight out of London come Factory Floor.

Well, to say they emerged as a result of James Murphy and co packing up shop is more than a bit of a falsehood, given they formed six years ago - but they are on DFA and there is more than just a passing resemblance between the two and I'm sure there are a more than a couple of LCD's records in their London bedrooms.

But enough about the past - what you need to know in the here and now is Factory Floor have a new track. It's called Two Different Ways, but don't be scared about the fact it's the same length as three pop singles played front to back.

It is a great dark and gitchy number with a wicked video - also made by the band.

There's this band called Dems and they are already getting quite a lot of attention from the likes of Rob da Bank to Pete Tong and lots of other people who appreciate a decent track when they hear one.

In the synth-pop mould of Delphic-Everything Everything-Wu Lyf, they're based in London and we know for a fact one of them works in media - but they definitely aren't dickheads (genuinely). This is the new video for House - a pretty clever concept which gorgeously compliments a blissful tune.

We're heading down to see them at the Brixton Ritzy on Wednesday (November 2) - they are more South London and don't have purple leggings - and we're expecting a pretty good show!!

Hessle Audio live from the RBMA takeover of the London Eye

Whoever at the Red Bull Music Academy brainstorm came up with taking over each pod of the London Eye and turning it into a little club deserves a knighthood.

Wow - just under 53-minutes clocking the rise of Phoenix in this documentary entitled - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - From A Mess to the Massess.

It's rather like Justice's A Cross the Universe and Soulwax's Part of the Weekend Never Dies - but they were both cool, so that should only be a good thing not a bad thing!

Oh Lord - after a couple of days on holiday I came back to work and Some Kind of Awesome made my year! They have discovered someone who has uploaded to stream and download all the Essential Mixes since Pete Tong's inaugral effort on October 30, 1993!

Okay, I haven't actually gone through and ticked off every single one, but there are 912, which equates to just under 11-weeks of audio - so you've got a lot to get through before you start complaining - start listening on Soundcloud.

There's stuff from Norman Cook, Carl Cox, Goldie, Justice, Daft Punk, David Guetta, Erol Alkan and the rest of DJ royalty.

I've only just begun investigating this treasure trove - but I began with a stonker, from the one and only Armand van Helden. Recorded in January 1996 - it came a year before his future Duck Sauce pal, A-Trak, had even won the World DMC Championships when he was just 15.

Work just got a whole lot bouncier.

NEW MUSIC: Daft Punk - Drive

You might not know the story – while giving the offices at Soma Records a bit of a Spring clean they came across an old DAT disk (no, I’m not sure what that is either) labelled Daft Punk – Drive.

A bit like the lost Scrolls of Atlantis, the label guys got very excited – a previously unreleased track from the French duo before they were Hollywood composers and recognised by their robotic headwear.

Apparently it was initially submitted in 1994 to accompany Rollin’ and Scratchin’ on Daft Punk’s first ever EP – but bosses weren’t happy with it and sent it back to be worked on. Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homen Christo replied with Da Funk, and the rest is history.

Well, it seems those in charge 17-years later are more than happy with the track which is being released as part of the label’s 20th Anniversary celebrations – Soma 20.

To the track – well it’s banging! The bass is ferocious throughout with enough energy to stop a burglar in his tracks. And with all the talk of Daft Punk’s sampling, there is an oddly familiar wailing which kick-starts the track but I can’t quite put my finger on it – answers on a postcard.

Have a listen – because you’re about to hear it everywhere…

NEW MUSIC: High Contrast ft. Tiesto & Underworld - The First Note is Silent

High Contrast is back rang out across radios from the high pitched, over-excited Irish tones of Miss Annie Mac as she had the exclusive first play of new tune, The First Note is Silent.

The Welsh drum and bass pioneer – who enlisted the help of Tiesto and Underworld for it – has always been known for his accessible strand of liquid D&B and has had massive successes with the likes of Racing Green and If We Ever - and I suspect this will do likewise.

It isn’t the best drum and bass track you’re going to hear this year, nor is it one of Lincoln Barratt’s classics, but the track marks a return and a makes a statement of intent for Top 40 success.

Out on Hospital Records, of course, the guy has been toiling for years with underground smashers and working dancefloors in nondescript clubs – so who can blame him for trying to line his pockets.

Because even if you criticise the track listening to it through your laptop speakers – you know full well when it gets played in a club your going to go crazy like a 13-year old girl at a Jonas Brothers gig!

In memoriam - Mehdi Favéris-Essadi 1977-2011

I fell in love with dance music at V Festival. Okay it’sabout as far removed from an electronic music event with any credibility orrespect as you can get - but being dragged to Groove Armada by my cousins in2004 did something to me nothing had done before.

The following night it was Basement Jaxx over Muse and Kings of Leon – before they started shagging ablaze – and the drug was well and trulyingested.

Spending the entire weekend the following two years in theStrongbow tent at Western Park seemed like the logical thing to do – onlyexiting to witness The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers on consecutive nights andreally only Dizzee Rascal the year after.

A waste of money? No – I heard some mind altering musicwhich changed my perspective completely, entirely and forever. I still didn’thave much knowledge of who or what I was hearing, but a few people stuck in mymind.

Lottie and Streetlife DJs for some reason resonated, as didan African looking man stepping from behind the decks during a remix of Rage Against the Machine and looking like he was having more fun than anyone else in thetent.

His enthusiasm was contagious, his joy uplifting and hisgenuine appreciation for everyone who had come to watch him play was somethingI never witnessed from the indie bands I had seen before my dance epiphany.

Starting university heightened my interest in clubbing. Ibegan going on blogs and learnt the names of DJs as I had once done offootballers. I looked back at who I must have had the time of my life listeningto at V Festival, and realised that DJ who mixed huge guitars, throbbing bouncybasslines and electronic kicks; who loved the party as much as the punters wasDJ Mehdi.

Five years on I answered the phone to the line “have youheard the news?”

There have been earthquakes, famines, hurricanes, break-upsand new jobs during my relationship with this particular friend, but none ofthese resulted in as urgent a phone call.

I press him to tell me what had happened and he answers“Mehdi’s dead.”

This man’s death, who neither of us had met or had any sortof formal relationship with, sent us into shock.

His productions were great, but that isn’t why there hasbeen such an outpouring at this news.

Mehdi gave the impression at his gigs that if I’d bumpedinto him on the street he’d say “hey, you were at V five years ago” before Icould even draw breath to say “oh my god you’re Mehdi.”

It is tragic news. It has shocked the dance musiccommunity, and music more generally, to the core.

My story will be no real consolidation to any of Mehdi’sfamily or friends but knowing that I am just one of thousands who feltsimilarly for Mehdi Favéris-Essadi will hopefully give them some comfort.

I wish the best to everyone who knew him. And may he restbehind a set of decks, a pair of headphones sat on his head, while God pleadsfor just ‘one more tune.’

Hotflush is one of my favourite labels. Top man Scuba has managed to pluck the good and the better of up-and-coming producers from Roska to Mounte Kimbe, Cosmin TRG and George Fitzgerald and put out some sublime records.

The scout has returned to production though, and has been equally as successful. Adrenaline is his new single, out at the beginning of next month, and signaling the beginning of a bit of a busy period for the Berlin based man who has a DJ Kicks comp coming out soon as well as an album in early 2012.

REVIEW: Stop Making Sense

The Garden, Petrcane, Croatia. Great place, great music, great people. Could just leave it at that, it would be a fair assessment of the festival.

Perched upon idyllic Mediterranean coastline, the intimate festival site holds one stage, a waterside dance floor, several bars, two beaches, a paddling pool, a volleyball court and an indoor club.

An eclectic mix of festival goers attended, of various nationalities and from all walks of life but united by a will to party. Even the artists were getting in on it and there was scarcely an act that didn’t stick around to join in on the festivities.

The music was almost entirely electronic, with the majority of that being house and tech-house.

The highlights of the festival included a set by The Correspondents complete with spontaneous dancers clad in assorted morph suits, the Trouble Vision boat party featuring showers of sparkling wine, followed by inebriated DJs, then overboard vomiting, and a sun set set at the waterfront by Midland.

A truly great and inspiring festival, get your tickets for next year people, you won’t regret it!

NEW MUSIC: Daniel Harksmann - Puerto Rico

When I first heard Daniel Harksmann's debut album - Rambazamba - earlier this year, I thought wow!

I listened again - and quickly realised the wow of the first listen hadn't done it justice.

It's absolutely amazing!

Sat in England I fell into the German stereotype of - oh yer, here is a German producer from Berlin with a surname like a soldier who has inevitably created some sort of driving, thumping techno which scares every cell into your body.

I was pleasantly surprised. It is a real mix bag of house, soul and samba vibes, with just a sprinkling of techno. Has to be a little right?

Anyway, here is the video for follow up track Puerto Rico. An '80s car chase, with some pretty funky Nightrider motors, a jumping baseline and it just makes you smile really!

Brixton Clubbing Tourist Board

Radio ClubFoot has a lot of places we call home. Beginning in Nottingham, we moved to Cardiff but have always had roots firmly ingrained in Oxford as well as North and East London – well now it has a new place where we like to rest our head.

Brixton, South London, gets a lot of bad press – but already we can see after a short time it’s really rather good.

The Academy obviously gets a lot of attention as the premier music venue in the area – and rightly so. Chase and Status have sold it out, Friendly Fires are putting on three nights, Rinse are celebrating their 17th Birthday, Dizzee is down for a show and Hospitality are bringing the best they have to offer to the iconic venue – all that and we haven't even mentioned Soulwaxmas in December marking the beginning of the festive celebrations.

But this is by no means a one hall town – Plan B over this Bank Holiday Weekend have put on reggae and Carnival legends David ‘RamJam’ Rodigan and Norman Jay, while just up the road, Jamm provides an eclectic mix which ranges from local-boys-done-good Basement Jaxx to Toots and the Maytals afterparties and appearances from the blissful Beirut.

The Dogstar has a reputation of providing kicking basslines to the weekend, and it seems two more places are set to open in the next few weeks to give this corner of the capital an extra spark.

Electric Social on Acre Lane and Electric Brixton on Town Hall Parade are both promising big things – though clearly there wasn’t a discussion on marketing and naming strategies between the two.

The former is keeping its cards very close to its chest but seems as if there will be a downstairs bar/lounge area while upstairs will home a dancefloor waiting to be abused.

Electric Brixton seems to have set its sights much higher. The 1,700-capacity venue is stepping from the ashes of The Fridge, with Steve Forster heading it all - the man behind the reinvention of Highbury's Garage and The Birmingham Institute, making them musical centres in their respective localities and beyond.

Felix the Housecat has been given the responsibility of opening it up, while our old friends from Nottingham, Spectrum, are using it as their London residency and will welcome Japanese Popstars, Borgore, South Central, Jakwob and another headline act on October 1.

Fuck riots. Let’s dance!

Amsterdam Dance Event announce first acts

Umm so, this event - despite its pretty shit name - looks awesome! Frankie Knuckles, Richie Hawtin, Sven Väth, Caribou, Carl Cox, Groove Armada present Red Light, Theo Parrish, Brodinski, Martyn, Soul Clap have just been announced plus a whole load more.

The Amsterdam Dance Event takes place in October across 52-venues offering"a unique blend of daytime conferences, including interactive workshops, technical demonstrations and in-depth round-table discussions, alongside a nighttime music festival," apparently.

It attracts 130,000 festival visitors from all around the globe - which is pretty damn cool - and add in to that its in Amsterdam!

L-Vis 1990 ft. Javeon McCarthy - Lost in Love

L-Vis 1990 - what can we say? He has been riding a crest of a wave ever since, well ever since he was a glint in his old man's eye it seems. He ripped things up in Brighton before casually sauntering slightly further away from the equator once he met Bok Bok - slowly taking over London with Night Slugs - they've even just launched a quite insurgency into America with sister label Fade to Mind headed up by comrade Kingdom.

Next month will see the release of L-Vis' debut album, Neon Dreams. Now we have been lucky enough to take a little preview listen and it is great.

Seriously awesome!

It's a sculpted album, telling a story, and with each track floating into the next seamlessly.

Lost in Love is the first single, featuring the vocal talent of Javeon McCarthy. Its reminiscent of some of the awesome dance tracks which used to pop up once again on Radio 1 driving to school in the '90s (obviously mum was actually at the wheel) - a wicked beat, soul, groove and passion.

Whenever I hear the vocals of Yukimi from Little Dragon I think yes, yes, YES! They are so mesmerising and whether its with Gorillaz, SBTRKT or new album Ritual Union with her Swedish friends I love it - you gotta grab that album by the way!

Anyway, this little lady went down to Ibiza with her Dragon friends and covered Crystal Waters' Gypsy Woman (La Da Dee) and Oh La Laa its amazing!

They even throw in a bit of Show Me Love :-)

This blog post has been a couple of days in the writing - things have been a bit hairy last couple of days!

Its basically this photo - how fucking cool is riding a rocking-horse while raving it up to Erol Alkan at Field Day!! Massive respect to this girl, and especially with throwing one spare hand up in the air.. Pretty nutty!

Anyway, speaking of our favourite DJ of Turkish/Crypriot decent, he has the rework of his Avalanche with Boys Noize featuring the vocal tones of Jarvis Cocker doing the rounds - but we are particularly loving the slowed down, 33 RPM minute version by Cold War Music.

Yer, they have probably just set it at the slower speed - but that's how moombahton kicked off right and now thats huge!

Take a listen for yourself below anyway, and riot-permitting, Erol's night at Fabric on September 2 with a live TBC guest, Gesaffelstein, Stopmakingme, Canblaster, Switch and a DJ from Jarvis himself is surely going to go off! (Well not in that way!)

Mr Lager & Asher Dust - Four Leaf Clover EP

What the Oxford duo of Mr Lager and vocalist Asher Dust have created with track Four Leaf Clover is quite different from the skeleton shattering dubstep of Nero and Flux Pavilion on Radio 1’s playlist. Rather, it’s quite a beautiful and anthemic sound more akin to the likes of Magnetic Man Skream’s original productions and the emerging bass scene pioneered by Pearson Sound and Joy Orbison.

The typically syncopated rhythm grabs attention – not knowing what is happening next, and like all good releases, the remix package adds extra layers of goodness.

Geiom’s edit doesn’t abandon the original too much but gives it a slightly more obvious, accessible beat. While Von D, who has been a regular on label Sub Freq – who are putting out Four Leaf Clover - really turns it dark. Despite being from Paris, he shuns the city’s typical musical style of Ed Banger-electro by turning up the bassline to accent the haunting tones of Asher Dust.

It’s a really strong release and with Oxford’s strong dub and reggae roots, expect more from these guys and expect it to be good.

Field Day 2011

Anecdotally, Field Day receives mixed reviews. The sound issues which troubled the one-day festival several years ago left a bitter taste in the mouths of some stubborn critics, otherwise, the day plays host to consistently brilliant and diverse line-ups and a positive atmosphere rarely matched by other festivals. And this year was no exception.

The sun was out (almost, sort of, not really) and the £4.10 cans of San Miguel were flowing. Radio Clubfoot arrived just in time to catch the end of Willy Mason who provided a beautifully nostalgic rendition of Oxygen before closing the first act on the main stage with some more of his droll-yet-infectious folk. Next up, we head over to the ever-popular Bugged Out tent for Pearson Sound (Ramadanman's alter ego) who is playing to a fairly sparse tent but his blend of electronica and 2-step is perfect for the early afternoon crowd and he's greeted with applause before Roska instantly ups the tempo. Opening with MC Dynamite's 'Wile Out' he works the now-growing crowd into a mini frenzy (mid-afternoon frenzy type) with an edit of Robin S' 'Show Me Love' and Katy B's 'Lights On'. This proves too much for Radio Clubfoot who pop over to the bandstand to hear renditions of some Mika song, then indulge in a game of Tug of War on the the Village Green – exemplary of Field Day's many-stringed bow.

Back to the Bugged Out tent to see a spindly James Blake fall foul of following Roska. His ambient something-or-other-step finds mostly blank faces and sluggishly-swaying legs. An executive decision is taken and we're off to the main stage to catch Villagers. It's perfect mid-afternoon sit-down fare. We never realised there were so many of them. We (I) thought it was just two blokes and a piano.

Mount Kimbie packed out the Laneway tent – and damn right too. Having seen them for the first time at Field Day last year, we were expecting big things. The duo delivered. For such understated music it filled the tent with an intensely emotive tension. The crowd may not have been pogo-sticking or moshing but when they dropped an extended version of 'Field', it was clear appreciation for their sparse, industrial sound had rocketed over the past year.

I forget what happens next – more San Miguel, more Tug-of-War? No. Maybe. But we glance some Benga and Youngman tearing it up to an exuberant gathering before pottering back to the Laneway tent to a surprisingly small crowd for man-of-the-moment-six-months-ago Jamie Woon. He struggles to turn his soulful pop into energry and the crowd looks unimpressed. Some sort of acoustic set would probably have been better but his money-maker 'Night Air' is met with enthused singing and he does well to keep some momentum with 'Lady Luck' and some other song. Disorientated and growing drunker by the hour, the Radio Clubfoot crowd splits – Erol Alkan, Warpaint, and Jamie xx.

I can't vouch for the other parties but Jamie xx was very enjoyable. The sun had offered a sustained period of light just before it started to set and the Blogger's Delight tent was heaving as Jamie of xx fame took to the decks. Anticipation was justified as he opens with his take on Gil Scot-Heron's 'I'm New Here'. The tent was bouncing. I often hear talk of Jamie's inability to mix. Well, while it wasn't crisp, it was fluid. And a well-gauged song selection – 'NY is Killing Me', 'I'll Take Care of You', and a re-edit of The xx's 'Shelter' - was enough to make the hour fly-by.

Some blurry moments are followed by catching the first few songs of The Horrors – packed-out tent and plenty of buzz but the sound wasn't their friend and it just sounded like nine men banging saucepans inside a giant seashell. Not great.

Onto the main stage and it's headliner time and it seems Wild Beasts have not quite got what it takes to take top spot. Opening with a host of songs from their newest album Smother, the party atmosphere of Two Dancers comes too late and the crowd have mostly lost interest. There are more flocking away than to the stage, which is shame as the band do sound good. They just lack the punch needed to keep revellers from a quick get-away to an after party. They finished as they began – with a disappointing fizzle. Closing the festival with the last song from Smother, 'End Come Too Soon' - not for much of this crowd.

So, all in all, Field Day goes from strength to strength and Radio Clubfoot is already excited about seeing next year's line-up.

New Daft Punk track - Drive

Wow oh wow - its the news dance music fans have been waiting for (well, sort of!), there is a new Daft Punk track called Drive coming out on September 19.

It's going to be part of Soma Records' 20th Anniversary compilation, the label which put out the track which made Daft Punk - Da Funk. But this new track, is kinda old. Legend has it Drive was sent by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo to accompany Rollin' and Scratchin' but was replaced after the label asked the French duo to work on it a bit more by the track which broke them - Da Funk.

Should we get excited? Should we go crazy? Time will only tell - but I wouldn't imagine a massive new tour to be unleashed with their Pryramid anytime soon...

Where's the summer sound?

At this point in the summer there are normally several certainties – the weather is on the wane, bbq enthusiasm has hit a year-low, and something somewhere has been crowned the “soundtrack to the summer”. But this year, and I may be wrong, there does not seem to be a stand-out summer tune. Regardless of how infuriatingly fickle it can be to base a season's musical endeavours on one track which usually claims the title by being at the right place at the right time, it's always nice to have that one track which, come Autumn, is remembered as synonymous with the season's exploits.

Last year it was Tensnake's deliriously up-lifting Coma Cat, what was it in 2009? Dizzee Rascal? La Roux? Little Boots? I forget, but that's not the point of a summer song. (Was Pjanoo the summer anthem of 2008?) It's not meant to last for years. It's all about the 'now'. It can be forgotten by October but as long as it's there when it matters, it's ok. Now, after that non-nonsensical hypothesis of summer songs, let us consider the 2011 contenders.

The Horrors are barely recognisable from the haunting, angry Strange House of 2007. But new album Skying and balearic single Still Life is hitting all sorts of right notes. Their performance at Field Day this week may well cement some sort of Summer Song stature.

Julio Bashmore can do no wrong. Jack Got Macked still gives me shivers and his summer shot this year Battle For Middle You is no different. It doesn't have all the feel good factor which might be required by the masses to accompany VK-fuelled, sun-drenched, booze nights. But who cares about them anyway?

What about The 2 Bears – Bear Hug as mentioned below? It annoys more than it entertains but it does stick in your head. As, I imagine, so would the memory of being on the receiving end of an actual bear hug.

I think there was potential for a Magnetic Man track to take the title but tracks like Perfect Stranger peaked too early and didn't have the stick-ability.

What about SBTRKT? That masked man's recent album release has incaptivating tracks like Pharaohs and Wildfire – which features Little Dragon.

Only time will tell if 2011's summer has a stand-out track. But for now, there doesn't seem to be one.

Well The 2 Bears (Raf Rundell and Joe Goddard) have been one of our favourite things about 2011. They are simply ace!

Bear Hug has been getting a load of love, playlisted on Radio 1, and rumour has it - Sir Paul McCartney was getting down to it at Kate Moss' wedding while Nick Grimshaw was DJing (if that doesn't conjure up a slightly weird image in your head I'm not sure what will...

Marble Players - Marble Summer EP

Marble Players is the combined forces of Surkin, Para One and Bobmo who came together out of Institubes' ashes when the great label called it a day earlier this year - and they are carrying on the tradition in fine style.

Marble Summer EP is out now - a collection of four sunny, uplifting house track. They are no-nonsense tracks, plain and simple awesome music.

Let You Go is a cracker, and with a mental video (below). Directed by LOL Boys, it seems to be The Sims-meets shitty early MTV videos set in Ibiza and all in the mind of Peter Stringfellow.

Paris is Burning is a bit more of a glitchy-tech track and Wipe Out, with its catchy female vocal, is more electro - and typically French - before A Minute of Love wraps up the four-track release in what can only be called a love song for the dance floor.

Hideout Festival - the comprehensive review

The tiny island of Pag is situated in the Adriatic Sea between Croatia and Italy. Although part of Croatia, the Italian influence is clear, particularly the Mediterranean inspired sea foods and stone-baked pizzas.

This very European corner however, took the first weekend of July to be set upon by British party-goers in the first ever Hideout Festival - a series of enormous open-air clubs lining pebble beaches and a calm turquoise sea provide an unorthodox backdrop to what the organisers insist is a festival. Populated more by high fashion than those simply getting high, the club settings were decorated with tree houses, pools, Jacuzzis and four-poster beds on the beach.

By far the most impressive feature however, was the view of the sunrise over mountains, ocean and coastline which emerged opposite the DJsin the early mornings, re-energising the dance floors and its inhabitants.

The pre-party was a beautiful beach warm-up. I seemed to be the only person taken aback by the London drink prices, but the music selection could not have been better, which moved from Elec-tech, to garage, to house, to funk, to soul, to hiphop and dubstep, without missing a beat. The DJs played their hearts out throughout the festival, with familiar favourites like Simian Mobile Disco dropping hits like Caribu Sun, inevitably drawing huge crowds at their outdoor stage.

Drum and bass sets galvanised the inevitable energy they thrive off, with Ms Dynamite and others controlling crowds of thousands with ease.

Damian Lazarus, a London lad who relocated to LA a few years ago addressed the British crowd as head honcho of the loose collective known as the Crosstown Rebels. Although Lazarus brought the house down with his closing set which combined vocals, beeps and basslines, the rest of the Rebels, Jamie Jones, Art Department , Deniz Kurtel and the out-of-this-world personality of Seth Troxler are all incredible individuals in their own right. Not only was their selection and mixing on point, but they clearly enjoyed every note played, as well as the company of each other in the DJ booth. They’d hang out during each others sets, and even wonder into the crowd for a boogie, which turned the usual VIP area/security guard army of most festivals on its head.

Jamie XX, another well-known favourite surprised a few with a classic tech/house selection, in addition to the indie-inspired vocals he’s best known for. But the highlight of Hideout for me were the boat parties. The crystal ocean and warm atmosphere usually created by more intimate clubs meant the boat parties were unlike any other clubbing experience.

Gas-filled balloons and pirate costumes added flavour to the ultimate feel good vibes. Diving off the side or watching the sunset surpassed all the flashing lights and smoke machines of your standard party venue.

The final day was stolen by Art Department. Starting a boat party from afternoon til dusk, they shifted to the beachside club drawing crowds as they went. As morning broke, the huge screen behind them read "AFTER PARTY ON THE BEACH (TO YOUR RIGHT)." From 8am the Art Department duo, with their live vocals and flawless mixing played until the venue owners literally cut the power.

A myriad of festivals litter the summer months, mainly hailing from Germany and other euro-dance hot-spots. Hideout however, has left a very British footprint on Pag, and, in attempting to merge Ibiza with Benicassim, have come out with something quite special this summer.

L-Vis 1990 announces debut album 'Neon Dreams'

Yeerrrrr boi! We've been so excited about this ever since we heard about L-Vis 1990's album project, and finally the top man at Night Slugs has revealed his debut album, Neon Dreams, will be released on September 26.

Coming out on PMR Records - who are killing it - the album was recorded during sessions in Paris (with Para One) and New York (with Nick Hook), as well as a number of other excited team-ups with the likes of Julio Bashmore and Teki Latex.

And L-Vis is pretty bold in what he hopes to the LP delivers: "In the late nineties the likes of Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers and Basement Jaxx defined the art of the dance music album. Their albums transcended time and any musical fads, but most of all they took you on a journey.

"Creating Neon Dreams for me was about recapturing these elements that made me fall in love with dance music all those years ago."

Way back when we had a radio show in Nottingham, we showcased a different night with a mix to show what greatness was out there. And well, we are doing it again.

Yeah Maybe, in their own words, "is a concept, a vibe, a figure of speech, a par, but more than a par, it's a party. A monthly party at The Alibi in Dalston, London, on the third Saturday of every month. And it's free. Always."

Drake joins SBTRKT for 'Wildfire'

Well, weren't the lucky people of Toronto in for a treat as not only did SBTRKT come to town and perform their awesome live show - but home town boy Drake joined the boys on stage and spat his verse over Wildfire.

The name of the bar, Wrongbar, must have been picked on purpose for this guise to send people off track - because it looks naughty! A capacity of just 300 people - and for anyone who has seen SBTRKT will agree, they are best seen in a tiny venue so they can grab you and drag you into their masked world.

Check it out for yourself, and if you haven't already grab the album because its the best thing about 2011 so far!

Prince is the ultimate music royalty at Hop Farm

Not many people can get away with wearing four inch heels, be loved and desired by women and men simultaneously while wearing eye-liner – but Prince can.

My God can he!

He blew Hop Farm Festival away with what was essentially a two-and-a-quarter hour greatest hits set including Little Red Corvette, Raspberry Beret and Kiss – not to mention Nothing Compares to You, after which he said: “That’s not my song, that’s Sinead O’Conner’s."

As confused faces spread across the crowd, a smile stretched across Prince's face: “But hey, I bought me a house with that song.”

The five-foot-two (thanks Google) singer gave the performance of a man who oozed class, charisma and outright talent and encapsulated the thousands who gathered to watch him in Kent with his twinkling fingers across his fret-board, amazing voice and a grace which makes Natalie Portman look like a Yeti dancing in a metal armored suit while being chained to the floor with the anchor from the Titanic.

He used the first song as essentially a live soundcheck – constantly chatting to the soundmen for more bass or less monitor as the rest of the band (the majority being hot women) played around him - it was special.

He had the crowd – which was a rather strange blend of Radio 2, Pimm's-drinking Sunday Times-readers and their children – in the palm’s of his hand and made them rise and fall on a whim.

He ended it all with a mammoth performance of Purple Rain accompanied by jets of purple ticker-tape flying from the stage and into the air – perhaps unsurprising but absolutely fantastic!

Well, I say he finished, as then followed three encores which included an appearance from Larry Graham (of Sly & the Family Stone).

It was epic – and frankly, Prince could rename himself Beryl and still be an absolute hero!

The Loops of Fury have been long-time friends of Radio ClubFoot - they were the first to take part in Showcasing... and played in our room at Koko back in April - well now it seems the likes of Annie Mac and 2ManyDJs are loving them!!

One of our favourite albums of this year so far has come from New York band Gang Gang Dance. Their album Eye Contact has wicked production and unique vocals, with track MindKilla a particular favourite.

Well, now a legend has jumped on it - and that is said in no uncertain terms - as reggae don-daddy Lee Scratch Perry has added his own verses and weaved them into the track to give it an entirely new edge.

Radio Soulwax goes live

If we were to say the Dewaele brothers and their guises weren't an influence behind the birth of Radio ClubFoot in the beginning and indeed our love of electronic dance music - then frankly we would be lying.

The first time I ever experienced utter euphoria in a club was watching them first as Soulwax, and then 2ManyDJs at the Warehouse Project way back in 2007. It was astonishing, it was magical, it was crazy, it was sweaty, it made all my senses jump and scream and demand me to do this over and over again.

Ecstasy!

Anyway, they have launched their long-awaited Radio Soulwax website, a plan which has been a long time in the planning which acts as a 24-hour streaming site offering mixes from the dynamic duo of synths and beats.

Currently they only have one mix streaming all day - perhaps they are just seeing how it works. Introversy is 420 of their favourite song introductions, with animated CD artwork akin to what they do with their live shows.

Criticise them all you want for selling out, or not being original enough, or anything else the Erol Alkan forum says - they are such good fun and always make us smile!!

Introducing Gorilla Warfare Tactics

Of late, there has been several hip-hop artists emerging that are taking much greater care in their craft. A few weeks ago we posted a track from Childish Gambino, a perfect example of this new breed. Detail and focus on word play and message is of course not new and is in fact where the art form began, with the likes of Public Enemy, Slum Village and A Tribe Called Quest. It then returned to the limelight with the likes of Jurrasic 5, The Roots, Black Star and Common in the late 90s.

It now seems that a new breed of artists are coming to the fore in an attempt to re-install the thinking man's rap at the top of the game. With artists like Das Racist and Hoodie Allen also running with this rejuvenated sound, the future looks promising. What is more, like the waves that came before them, these new artists are using new methods to get their music heard. In the past the likes of Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys would push their music through relentless touring to ensure their voice was heard. The subsequent movement in the late 90s was grounded by The Roots who acted as a house band, utilizing the live music element of their music instead of relying on the DJ alone. This provided a foundation for rappers and other artists to 'pass the mic' and get their songs heard in a new way. The fruition of this can be seen when the same group of artists came together to perform for Dave Chappelle's Block Party.

Today's artists are just as versatile when it comes to getting their music across to fans; with artists like Childish Gambino and Odd Future finding success after releasing mixtapes and albums online before even considering charging fans. The initial freebies allow fans to invest in the artist before having to commit financially. It seems to have worked for the likes of Odd Future who had already gathered a huge following before Tyler, The Creator finally dropped his first album that had to be paid for earlier this year.

The new group on the scene, Gorilla Warfare Tactics seem to be following this approach, providing an EP and several songs on the internet for free over the last few months. The trio who go by the names of Kid Dilla, Vivek and Vik are producing songs of a ridiculously high quality. Their recent single 'Temptations', which samples the Motown classic 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg' by The Temptations (makes sense now doesn't it), is testament to this.

One to add to your summertime soundtrack. Enjoy!

Tyler Does A Love Song...Sort Of...

Frank Ocean seems to be stepping up his campaign to be the next artist to breakthrough from the Odd Future pack. He's getting a helping hand from the group member closest to a househould name, Tyler, The Creator. Tyler's new single 'She' features Frank Ocean and has recently had a video released which puts an unsettling twist on the boy meets girl next door format that had previously been nauseating.

Tyler utilizes his psuedo-psycho killer trademark to deliver lines such as "you'll be down in the earth quicker if you diss me tonight". The deceptively dulcet tones of Frank Ocean help give this song the softness it needs to juxtapose Tyler's audacious rhymes. The video is equally bizarre yet brilliant, with Tyler comfortably playing a creepy stalker and Frank Ocean randomly dressing in Asian attire, Sedge Hat and all, during the chorus.

It's definitely worth a watch. Odd Future are killing it right now.
